Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he liked taking part in various card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very competitive in the above-mentioned card games as he was competing against his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little bit and moved to New York City to compete in some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were rough as he would play many hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he might improve his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus attention more on the game.
The definite advancement in his abilities began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would frequently compete against one another. He was able to access several of the greatest minds in chess. With their assistance, he would tweak his cunning thinking abilities. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL Texas Holdem.
Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie was a great student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest female players the poker arena has ever seen. He relocated to Sin City in 1993 and competed in money games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard decided to play more tournaments.
