Regardless of the name, Caribbean stud poker is most closely related to chemin de fer than old guard poker, in that the players bet against the casino rather than the other players. The winning hands, are the traditional poker hands. There is no concealment or other kinds of boondoggle. In Caribbean stud poker, you are expected to ante up before the croupier saying "No further bets." At that moment, both you and the bank and of course every one of the other gamblers receive 5 cards. After you have observed your hand and the casino’s initial card, you must either make a call bet or give up. The call wager’s amount is akin to your beginning wager, indicating that the stakes will have doubled. Giving Up means that your bet goes immediately to the bank. After the bet is the showdown. If the dealer does not have ace/king or greater, your wager is given back, plus an amount in accordance with the original bet. If the house does have ace/king or better, you succeed if your hand is greater than the casino’s hand. The casino pony’s up money equal to your original bet and fixed expectations on your call bet. These odds are:
- Even for a pair or high card
- two to one for 2 pairs
- three to one for three of a kind
- 4-1 for a straight
- 5-1 for a flush
- 7-1 for a full house
- 20-1 for a 4 of a kind
- fifty to one for a straight flush
- 100-1 for a royal flush
